Asia – Who's Top for Education Online

This week we’re taking a look at how Asian Universities are doing in the online stakes. We looked at the Top Universities in Asia according to the QS University Rankings and created our own group of the 50 most authoritative online. We’re interested in how their online presence compares to their overall ranking: none of the Universities that hold a Top 10 position in the QS Ranking come out as strong in our ranking.

Do you pay attention to your MP online?

Co-founder of tweetminster @AlbertoNardelli has gatheredthe names of British MPs on twitter to see who are the most engaging, listened to, and authoritative online. The first Green Party MP @carolinelucas and the Minister of State for Housing & Local Government @grantshapps made it into the top 10.

Alberto Nardelli talked to us about why he wanted to create a list of MPs and how social media is important in politics: “When we launched Tweetminster there were four MPs on Twitter. There are now over 305. It’s great to see so many MPs now using Twitter all in very different ways – to engage with people, to comment on news, to report from the HoC and to debate. Ultimately, I believe this contributes to making politics more open and social. Platforms like Peerindex allow us to see how MPs are using Twitter and how active they are, in a glance, and this is very useful”.

Education in Latin America has been in the spotlight recently, with more Universities from this area scoring highly in this year’s University ranks. The Economist also published a story that evaluated the performance of Latin American Universities. So, the second region we are focussing on in our Education Online series is Latin America, with one Chilean and two Brazilian universities making it into the top 3.

Back Up and Running – PeerIndex Outage Sunday 6th November

GO

As we mentioned yesterday, there was a service outage on the PeerIndex site yesterday.

The outage was due to an obscure divide by zero bug in the linux operating system on one of our servers. In plain English, the server crashed. The patch to fix the bug has been deployed.

Everything is back to normal now and the outage didn’t affect your data, but if you do notice anything odd at all, please let us know.

A Packed Weekend – Mozilla Festival and Fireworks!

We know that some of you will be looking forward to Catherine wheels, sparklers and burning a rusty old suit in the shape of Mr Fawkes this Saturday. Well, we can’t wait for it either.

Fireworks 1

But, remember, remember… the Mozilla Festival, kicking off this evening!

We’ll be heading along over the weekend, with our CTO Sanford Dickert giving a talk on Sunday afternoon. Our CEO Azeem Azhar will also be there on Sunday. And the rest of us will be floating around getting involved in the other events from tonight onwards.

Do come and say hey to Sanford, Azeem, or any of us who are at the event.

#MozFest is the hashtag for thoughts and talking about what’s going on during the event.

And if you aren’t already attending but want to come along register here.

Bringing Twitter onto the Pitch

Mexican football team Jaguares de Chiapas have grabbed the limelight with an innovative new way of promoting their twitter presence.

We had a quick look at how some of the players rank, with the club itself still beating any of its players to the top spot:

It’ll be interesting to see how the commentators react to this, and whether this catches on with other clubs. Valencia made a similar move back in September when they put the club’s twitter handle on players’ shirts instead of a sponsor. So which team will be next to bring twitter onto the field?
